Jack Howard stared in horror at the western horizon. The Pyramid of Menkaure was engulfed in flames, lighting up the Giza plateau like a vision of hell. Those who had been threatening it had finally got their way, picking up where the son of Saladin had left off in the 12th century, only with powers of destruction that no medieval caliph could ever have envisaged. Jack felt the anger well up inside him, a rage against those who had orchestrated this. They claimed to be acting in the name of the one god, but in truth they represented no god. He looked down at the form that had followed him out of the tunnel entrance. He and Costas had just carried out one of the most extraordinary dives of their lives, and had uncovered the greatest treasure that any civilisation could offer. He glanced at the flames again, this time feeling only a cold determination. He would not let the forces of darkness destroy the truth of history. He turned back and helped Costas to his feet. ‘This place is about to implode. If we don’t get out of here tonight, the world will never know what we’ve found. Let’s move.’

Underwater archaeologist Jack Howard is on the trail of an extraordinary revelation – a revelation which could rewrite history.

1892. A former British soldier, a veteran of the war against the Mahdi, emerges from the depths of a Cairo sewer. He claims to have been trapped for months in an ancient underground complex where he had stumbled on a dazzling treasure from the time of the pharaohs. He was dismissed as a madman who had lost his mind in the desert, and his story was forgotten. Until now …

Present-day. When Jack Howard learns of the soldier’s story, his mention of a ‘blinding shaft of light’ captures his attention. With the political situation in Egypt at boiling point, Jack and his friend Costas risk everything in a dangerous mission to find the truth. Their mission takes them from a shipwreck in the Mediterranean to the depths of the Red Sea, and back through Egyptian history to the spectacular reign of Akhenaten, the Sun-Pharaoh – and keeper of an incredible secret …
